Customer Rating: Summary: VMware Fusion + RAM = Perfect MacBook Comment: Purchased this along with 4BG of RAM for my Black MacBook. Installed Windows XP as the "Virtual Machine". Everything works flawlessly. Now I have my Mac and my favorite Windows programs all in the same place! Very VERY useful.
For those that don't know. This software "tricks" Windows XP into thinking it is installed on it's own computer. In reality, Windows XP is installed on the Mac Hard Drive. So when you start VMWare, it starts Windows XP in its own Mac window. You even see the Windows XP startup dialog! So imagine running XP in a Window with Mac OS X and you have the idea. You can also run the XP (or Vista, or whatever) operating system "full screen".
The best way to have the best of both operating systems.
Customer Rating: Summary: Fusion operates excellently Comment: As a former Virtual PC user (slow and buggy doesn't even begin to describe how that program works), I was delighted to find a beautiful integration of windows functionality into the Mac OS. I tried all three available for Core Duo chips and found Fusion to be fastest, most flexible, and least buggy. When I tried loading one of my behemoth data processing programs onto Parallels, not only was it slow, the graphics were choppy and often undecipherable. Crossover is limited in what I can put in there and currently does not support xml programs, the new standard. I use crossover still because it runs the programs without opening up a virtual windows program. But my mainstay is Fusion as I can open ebooks made with windows only programs, run my 5 or six important data processing programs and move data back and forth across platforms. I also found accessing all the information on the mac part of the drive easier on Fusion than on Parallels, but maybe I didn't try hard enough. The mac drive shows up under "My Computer" and you're in. I can download anything into OSX and access it later in the fusion window. It makes my workday less complicated. All in all, this is an excellent product. I can't think of any downsides as I haven't bumped into problems yet and I use this product daily.
Customer Rating: Summary: Easy Install - Runs Faster Than Bootcamp! Comment: I can't believe how easy it was to install Fusion. I read both the positive and negative reviews and was somewhat skeptical. I downloaded the lastest version 1.1.3 and it installed flawlessly. Once installed, I selected the easy install option, selected my OS (I have Vista Home Premium), accepted all the defaults, allocated a max amount of disk space to 30GB and Vista was installed. That's it. No issues and now that I'm using it along with Office 2007, I notice it runs much faster than when I was using BootCamp! I can't explain it, but I'm very pleased at the speed increase. So far I've had no driver issues or any other conflicts and all my Mac hardware works great when in VM. I'm not a gamer so I can't speak to that although I did read that the new version 2.0 is addressing some of those issues. Perhaps some of the negative experiences were from earlier versions of the software which I read have been fixed in 1.1.3 FYI: System is MacBook Pro 2.4, 4GB RAM, 10.5.4
Customer Rating: Summary: Fusion just works well Comment: I was used to Vista at the office and Quicken for Windows did not convert to Quicken for Apple. I wanted an iMac though so VMware's Fusion was the answer. It makes switching between the Appple OS and Vista OS as easy as going from one program to another. And Microsoft's Office 2008 is still behind the PC version, Office 2007. Again, some of my Office 2007 files, especially Excel files using conditional formatting did not work with Office 2008. Dear Microsoft, you are shortchanging you Apple customers.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good option for accessing some of the best of pc and mac Comment: I recently switched from PC to mac on the exhortation of several mac users who said that it was a great option even for business people as most business software now was available in mac version. turns out that that is not exactly the case - while software like Quicken is available, it is really out-dated relative to the windows version. SO after many headaches, i resorted to running windows on my mac, using VMware Fusion. It works pretty well, allowing me to run all the programs i need without having to reboot the computer in one OS or the other. I can also drag files across the interface. Some things are a little clunky. For example, I can not access my bluetooth in windows to sync my treo with my outlook without losing the ability to give it back to mac for my wireless keyboard and mouse. Also, if i want to use firefox as my browser, I need to have a mac and a windows version installed as I can't link from windows software like outlook to mac version of Firefox. But overall it's a good interim solution till Apple gets enough developers writing business software for the mac OS
