Summary: S-L-O-W -- and beware auto-renewal
Comment: McAfee 2007 increased Windows XP boot-up time from 40 seconds to over 5 minutes, and it seems to constantly interfere with applications that have no reason to access the Internet -- even when no applications that do (email, browser) are open. If there is something it doesn't like, it doesn't say -- it has never reported a problem. Is there some reason a background application can't actually run in the background?
Because of its slow performance, I wasn't planning on renewing after a year. But after 11 months to the day, McAfee sent me an email message that they had automatically renewed my subscription. I checked all material I got with the downloaded installation package and found no reference to this arrangement; they certainly didn't advertise it at the time. (Don't let them have your credit card number!) It took only about 15 minutes on the telephone with someone with an Indian accent to cancel, though, so this situation could have been worse.

Summary: Stable On My Computer
Comment: I purchased this product after suffering persistent problems with Norton Internet Security 08 and Norton 360. I just couldn't keep the "autoprotect" and "liveupdate" features from breaking. After a couple re-installs and numerous manual fixes I gave up. The McAfee has been stable and quietly working in the background for a month now.
Is either of these providing better protection than the other? Who knows!
At this point, just not having to fuss with it all the time is good enough.

Summary: AVG anti virus is Free online, why pay money...
Comment: Folks I used Norton system works a couple of years ago, then I decided to switch to this McAfee stuff only to hate its anoying bell rings and some other things etc. Then somebody on a online chat room told me about AVG anti virus and the anti-virus is free to download and stays updated. If you think about it all you really need is the anti-virus, microsoft has you cover with a firewall and most spyware blocker tools, so all you really need is the anti-virus. Its been several months and I have had no virus, NONE, no problems NONE at all. Hands down, AVG anti virus has been the best thing that has ever happen to me, it doesnt bother you and it does the job extremly well and it updates when needed. And the best part, IT FREE... :D

Comment: I got the McAfee virus scan a couple of days ago, it was kind of a pain to set up, that has more to do with me than the software. I haven't seen or had any problems with it so far and would by again

Summary: Works but change the default settings.
Comment: Been using VirusScan for a few years now. Most times it is cheaper to buy the retail package than automatically upgrading through the McAfee site.
The default Firewall configuration is not very helpful. The sections:
Firewall, Security Level is set to "Tight" and should be increased to "Stealth" to block all inbound network connections.
Smart Recommendations gives "Full Access" to any executable it recognizes. Better to Disable Smart Recommendations.
Firewall, Program Permissions. The default Enable Smart Recommendations setting fills this up very quickly. Most programs don't require access to the Internet or they can survive with "Outbound-Access only". I left all the McAfee programs with "Full Access".
The above changes will cause more messages from Mcafee when a program tries to access the Internet. This is much better than the default to automatically give "Full Access".
The SiteSdvisor browser Add-on works well with Google.
e.g. if type micorsoft instead of microsoft, it will put and exclamation sign next to the links in the search results.
However, there is no warning when you type directly into the address bar.
