Summary: A resource hog but effective
Comment: As I write this review McAfee is using approximately 100megabytes of memory. This is clearly a consideration if RAM is in short supply on your machine. McAfee has never had a light footprint when it comes to system resources and this version is no different (this probably won't be noticeable on newer machines).
The install process was easy on all three machines I installed the software on (2 running XP Pro and one running Vista Ultimate). In fact this version of the software uses a really convenient system where you register on their site to activate your software. This way you don't need to worry about losing your software key. Some may find that intrusive but I find it useful.
I think most people are familiar with the most basic function a virus/spyware scanner performs. It looks for pre-defined viruses/spyware and makes sure that you don't download, email or install them. McAfee has never been at the top of the list of virus detection but it isn't the worst either.
I think perhaps the feature of this version that I like most is the Site Advisor feature (something not found in free scanners). What this does is pre-scan all the webpages you are going to against a central database and lets you know if virus or spyware problems have been found on those pages. This is particularly useful for people who are not familiar with more advanced methods for avoiding suspect websites. However, this feature is somewhat problematic because on two of my older systems it significantly slowed Internet Explorer 7 (though it did not slow down Firefox 3 at all).
Also useful is the Easy Networking tool that is included. This allows you to see a map of your network and to see the status of the McAfee software on each. It does not use anything more sophisticated than a Windows Workgroup but it makes it easier to set up and use a home network to share printers and files. However, I recommend caution setting up a network using this tool if you also have a wireless router. It may or may not warn you about setting up strong encryption on your router to prevent people from logging on to your home network and viewing your network shares.
Overall I feel pretty good about this software and I plan to leave it on all three computers. I'm not entirely sure I'll renew the license in a year but I suppose I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Summary: Better than Norton 360, Hands Down
Comment: Still I did experience a bit of a slowdown, but nothing like with 360. I'm running Vista and I think that's part of it. I'm considering a downgrade. Actually, I'm going to. XP, worked great for me. Vista iCandy, no good, at least not for me.
That being said, this programs seems to do everything it's supposed to do. I've been using it for over a month now and have experienced no problems. It stays in the background and does what it's supposed to do without getting in the way and that's about the highest praise a program like this can get.

Summary: Gets the job done
Comment: I've been running McAfee's anti-virus software for quite a while now and am satisfied with the product. It does the job it's billed to do without causing any of the slowdown problems that other users have complained of. (Although that is always a problem when using software of this type, so caveat emptor.)
One thing I don't like is that the software installs a clunky "SecurityCenter" that I don't care for and that consumes resources. The software also wants to install a firewall (I don't care for McAfee's version), privacy software and similar. I don't like it when programs attempt to foist bloatware on users like that.
But other than that, the software operates efficiently and effectively. It does consume resources, but if you have the latest generation of PC, that shouldn't prove to be a problem.

Summary: Excellent Product
Comment: Five Stars!!! McAfee VirusScan Plus is an outstanding product and an oustanding value. I was previously using Norton 360 Version 2.0 and it was an absolute dog, slowing my computer to a standstill. But this McAfee is just the opposite. Excellent virus protection, easy installation, McAfee SiteAdvisor, easy computer scans, and NO slowing of my computer. My computer is safe and I'm not pulling my hair out!

Summary: Comprehensive protection, little or no user performance impact
Comment: Here is a note before I start off on the detailed review: I noticed another review which complained about his computer being very slow after installing McAfee antivirus - even I did noticed the slowness but that was only on the second day, maybe McAfee is trying to do some additional scanning or something like that, after 1 or 2 days, the system will be normal
Antivirus software market is very mature - both the market leaders in Antivirus - McAfee and Norton/Symantec offer equally good virus updates and protection.
But there are a few factors which make McAfee stand out:
* Cost - McAfee 3 user license costs $42 compared to $85 for Symantec(atleast as of this this day)
* Comprehensive protection - McAfee protects against Spamware and Viruses
* On access scan - This is something which you will hate as well as equally like : The Antivirus will always keep running in the background and scan each and every website you visit, each and every program you run. This will slow down things a little bit, but the protection is comprehensive.
I have noticed that McShield much faster than Symantic in On-Access scanning
* Easy to share : A 3-user license is very easy to share, you get to create an online account with McAfee with which you can download the latest version of antivirus on any computer and install it
